Social Media Content

I used the style that was established to steer the selection of existing footage that the client provided as well.

A client approached me for brand development and the creation of social media content for Chassay Production Music. The newly-launched brand represents Sony Music Production Japan’s entry into the American market, and the client wanted their social media presence to reflect their high end production.

I felt it was important to create a unique and recognizable visual style that could people could associate with the brand. Like the music, I wanted the imagery to be unique and aesthetic enough to stand on its own but also serve its purpose as an accompaniment.

Since the social media campaign was part of a whole package that I was creating for Chassay, including Composer Portraits videos and graphic design projects for print and web, I used it as a base for developing the style. It was also important to create a large pool of work that fully encompassed the brand’s wide range.

Through a series of home and professional studio visits, I captured an intimate view into how Chassay’s composers create the music for the brand. I wanted the images and short video clips to not only resonate with other musicians and composers, but also show prospective music licensers how much skill and effort went into the music’s production.

The first thing I concentrated on, stylistically, was lighting.  To bring some contrast and drama with light, I used a combination of natural light and a large soft continuous source to create shape through back lighting and to highlight specific places for the viewer to focus. When possible, I also introduced a light haze to encourage beams of light and to help create depth in otherwise small spaces.

The lighting choices created a bed for strong color tones. I utilized the wide range of colors and ambiance that often surrounds musicians’ spaces to create some diversity across the images. I shot with color contrast in mind and pushed saturation and color tones heavily in final editing.

Lastly, I wanted to create very specific subject and focus for the images so that they could be interpreted quickly and effectively while being consumed quickly on social media. I chose my focal lengths carefully to highlight the scale or relation of my subject and shot wide open with a shallow depth of field to further isolate what was important. The overall look contributed to consistency across the catalog of images.
