CONCEPT, STYLING

Working in a small space means keeping gear and modifiers as small as possible to reach the intended affect.

Kimb James, Director of Creative at Pattern Beauty reached out to shoot the brand’s new Palo Santo Conditioner for a launch in Sephora stores. Kimb secured a location and provided a mood board featuring warm tones, strong, directional lighting, and moody contrast.

On the day of the shoot we focused on creating small scenes that felt natural and interesting.  I brought depth and contrast with a mixture of soft and hard light aiming to draw the viewers eye into the product.  I like using continuous lights for projects like this because it allows a real time view of the scene that makes the stylist’s life easier and can lead to more creativity.  Even though the shoot was in a small bathroom space, I provided a compact multi-monitor setup for review and tethered capture to preview final looks and approve shots quickly.

The project was on a tight deadline so once the shoot was completed I made color and tone adjustments to all of the select photos and passed them on to Kimb before the end of the day.

The Pattern team selected about a dozen images and submitted detailed editing notes.  Since we used a product mockup for the also fixed print issues, color matched various components, and added missing elements like crimping to the bottle in addition to standard edits.

I turned around edits in the same day and delivered high resolution uncropped images so the Pattern design team had the most versatility possible.

The images worked so well that they wanted to recreate the shoot a few weeks later to capture additional group shots. I keep notes of my setups from every shoot and was easily able to recreate the look.  I took over styling and tackled around a dozen setups with various product combinations.  Once again I turned images and edits around rapidly and Pattern had everything they needed for a successful launch.
